Largest Container Ship Sets Records at PSA Antwerp, Calls at PSA Ports around the World

The HMM Algeciras – currently the largest container ship in the world – has recently called on several PSA ports around the globe. On 11 June 2020, PSA Antwerp received the vessel, breaking two productivity records at the same time.

Noordzee Terminal surpassed its call size record for the most containers handled during a single visit to the terminal, handling a total of 6,553 containers over 29 hours.

In addition, an average of 226 containers per hour were loaded and unloaded on the HMM Algeciras during its call, setting a new vessel rate record in PSA EuroMed & Americas.

To handle this vessel, PSA Antwerp deployed its largest quay cranes, which are 52 meters high and have an outreach of 26 containers wide.

The HMM Algeciras, made in Korea, is currently the largest container vessel in the world with a length of 400 meters, a width of 61 meters and a total capacity of 23,964 TEUs.

The HMM Algeciras also called at PSA Hyundai Pusan Newport Terminal (PHPNT) in April. In total, over 4,500 TEUs were handled at PHPNT in 22 hours, before the vessel left for its next port of call.

The vessel will call at PSA Singapore in July, marking its footprints on the global network of PSA ports around the world.
