PSA Singapore’s First Super Low Energy Building

With sustainability as a cornerstone of PSA’s business philosophy, the upcoming Tuas Port in Singapore is designed and constructed with green operations in mind. At the heart of this next-generation port lies PSA Singapore’s first Super Low Energy Building – the Maintenance Base Admin Building situated at Tuas Finger 2.

In April earlier this year, the building was awarded the coveted Green Mark Award (Platinum), under the Super Low Energy Building category by Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority, highlighting its best-in-class energy performance, use of renewable energy and other intelligent energy management strategies.

A smart energy management system has been implemented, which utilises sensors to collect building behavioural data such as temperature, humidity, light intensity, and carbon dioxide concentrations. The data will be used to better predict future usage of the building’s resources, allowing the building to achieve a higher level of energy efficiency.

In addition, passive design features such as thermal break window frames which utilise natural sources of heating and cooling, along with an innovative air-conditioning system were also incorporated in the design of the building. These features work together to further maximise energy efficiency and thermal comfort by reducing solar heat from entering indoors while providing optimal ventilation.

With its various energy-saving and energy-efficient features, the Tuas Maintenance Base Admin Building is expected to use 58% less energy annually as compared to other similar-sized buildings. The building will also be the first net-zero energy building in PSA Singapore, thanks to its ability to generate clean energy for consumption through both the photovoltaic panels that clad its exterior façade and roof solar panels atop Tuas Maintenance Base.
