Driving Sustainable Growth

PSA aims to be a global leader in Climate Action driving sustainable growth in the port and supply chain industry. The Group endeavours to not only bring about decarbonisation, energy saving, water conservation and waste reduction within its portfolio of assets, but also shapes and establishes more sustainable and resilient trade flows by working with partners.

Group Sustainability

Group Sustainability develops PSA’s sustainability strategy and coordinates the implementation of Group-wide sustainability initiatives across the organisation. To promote integration of the strategy and gather comprehensive insights, Group Sustainability collaborates with business functions within PSA, focusing on areas such as Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), Green Finance, IT sustainability, and sustainable procurement.

Climate Response Management System

PSA has introduced a Climate Response Management System (CRMS) to align our climate-related initiatives and focus our efforts on four key areas of climate change – namely greenhouse gases, energy, water and waste – with reducing carbon emissions as our most pressing goal.

Group Sustainability works closely with PSA’s global business units to implement various initiatives in line with the targets and objectives in the CRMS.

Under the CRMS, PSA has rolled out the following initiatives:

  • A global climate education program to equip staff, functional experts and leaders with relevant knowledge at all levels to make sustainable choices in and outside of the workplace.
  • Adoption of tools and methodologies such as Marginal Abatement Cost Curve (MACC) to help our business units prioritise their abatement options.
  • Onsite assessment by a roving team of experts to help business units with decarbonisation efforts.

Green Financing Framework

PSA believes that Green Finance Transactions (GFT) are effective tools to channel investments to projects that have demonstrated environmental benefits and thereby contribute to the achievement of the SDGs. PSA intends to align its funding strategy with its mission, sustainability strategy and objectives through GFTs.

PSA has established this Green Finance Framework under which PSA entities intend to issue GFTs to finance and/or refinance new and/or existing green assets or projects promoting environmental progress.

Our Energy Transition Plan

To chart the progress of our decarbonisation journey, Energy Transition Plans (ETPs) have been developed with ground-up initiatives from our business units around the world. All initiatives are categorised into 7 decarbonisation levers, with regular review of the ETPs by relevant subject matter experts.

The 7 decarbonisation levers are:

  • Digitalisation & Optimisation
  • Hybridisation
  • Electrification
  • Low-carbon / New Sustainable Fuel
  • Electrical Grid Optimisation
  • Purchase of Renewable Energy
  • Generation of Renewable Energy

Our Initiatives

Electric Yard Cranes and Battery-Powered AGVs

Where possible, we use Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes (RMGs) which operate on electricity. We also introduced Electrical Rubber-Tyred Gantry Cranes (eRTG) which are powered by electrical power instead of conventional diesel engines. An eRTG uses about half the amount of energy required to handle 1 TEU compared to a conventional diesel RTG. Our eRTGs are currently being deployed at our terminals around the world.

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) are also being employed in PSA Singapore. Each unit comes equipped with a replaceable modular Lithium Battery Pack, allowing the vehicle 4-5 hours of operational time for every 20 minutes of charging.

Dual-Fuel LNG Tugs

PSA Marine’s LNG dual-fuel tugs contribute towards lower greenhouse gas emissions. Compared to an equivalent conventional tug using low-sulphur, carbon dioxide emissions are lowered by approximately 20%, while nitrogen oxide emissions are lowered by an approximate 80%.

PSA Marine will continue to evaluate the life-cycle cost and business use case for the project, taking into consideration higher capital expenditures, the payback period as well as business conditions.

Corporate Headquarters – PSA Horizons

By minimizing energy use via smart technologies and an optimized building layout, while also maximizing renewable energy production, the building is able to achieve “Work, Learn and Play” while maintaining a high level of sustainability.

  • More than 35% of storm water captured are reused for irrigation, while 3-Tick water fittings are used for appliances
  • Low Carbon Concrete is used for the superstructure, while organic fertilizer is used for landscaping
  • The total leaf area is 4.3 times the total site area, with 60% of trees and shrubs being native and drought resistant
  • Solar panels are installed for renewable energy production, while better material selection results in reduced façade heat gain
  • Electric vehicle chargers have been installed

Supply Chain Solutions

PSA BDP strives to support and enable shippers to make greener logistics choices.

Offering distinctive port-centric supply chain solutions to benefit cargo owners and service providers with the ability to better manage their cargo flows for greater efficiency, agility and resilience. We believe that by working together with our partners and customers, we can leverage data to orchestrate supply chains better – optimising routes to reduce wastage during transport, and choosing transport modes that are more fuel efficient.

Opt-E-Arrive Programme

Leveraging our digital capabilities and close stakeholder collaborations, PSA’s Opt-E-Arrive programme facilitates the transparent ship-to-port data exchange and real-time activity synchronisation, enabling Just-In-Time vessel arrivals at our terminals. The dynamic optimisation of vessel arrivals with terminal resource planning and more efficient vessel bunker consumption is supported through the programme.

PSA Green Corridor

As a leading global port operator and supply chain solutions provider, PSA is ideally positioned within the value chain to develop and deploy new solutions that improve efficiency, resiliency, and that support decarbonisation in supply chains. Through the PSA Green Corridor, we innovate and envision the provision of carbon-neutral maritime routes connecting through the network of PSA terminals globally. These green corridors will be supported by a suite of value-added green services at PSA terminals, generating carbon abatement values across the entire ecosystem.
