#Innovators of PSA – Hans Raj

Portrait of Hans Raj - one of the innovators of PSA

Hans Raj is currently the Head of Engineering for PSA Mumbai and started his PSA career in Singapore about 30 years ago. Over the years he has worked in various PSA terminals across Singapore, Vietnam, Yemen, India, Saudi Arabia and China. His duties have ranged from assisting in green field start-ups, commissioning equipment, reviewing terminal design to driving terminal retrofitting.

According to Hans, a good quality for an innovator is to have a “can we do this better” mindset, a particularly useful attitude when spearheading challenging projects like exploring how to harness solar power for our port equipment.

Innovation has always been part and parcel of our business. Hans recalls when he started working for PSA in the late 1980s, innovation was key when port equipment needed to undergo changes to digitalise controls and make the equipment safer and more reliable.

To him, innovation is an essential part of anyone’s toolbox. And beyond using innovation to solve problems he also sees teamwork as a crucial part to make things better.

Just for fun, we asked Hans how he imagines we will travel in 100 years. In his vision of the future travel will mostly be for fun and less for work. He sees technology enable us to work anywhere in virtual form. This way we could remotely conduct meetings, trainings or oversee remote projects.
