LNG Prime Movers Begin Operations at PSA Singapore

A new fleet of 80 liquefied natural gas (LNG) prime movers (PMs) have begun their operations at PSA Singapore’s Pasir Panjang Terminal, since the opening of Singapore’s first LNG refuelling station for a vehicle fleet in April 2021. This marks a significant milestone in PSA Singapore’s decarbonisation journey, as it targets to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% from 2019 levels by 2030.

With a tank capacity of approximately 130 kg, each new LNG PM can operate for over 20 hours before refuelling. Compared to diesel, LNG is a cleaner alternative fuel for PMs that burns with lower carbon dioxide emissions. It also significantly reduces the emissions of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter. Since their deployment, the new LNG PMs have helped PSA Singapore reduce its carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions from PMs by an estimated 20%!

The newly introduced LNG refuelling station is also designed to further PSA Singapore’s decarbonisation efforts in the future and pave the way towards a potential expansion of our LNG PM fleet. With four dispensers and a capacity of 40 tonnes, the station can refuel up to 300 LNG PMs daily. Its unique design will also ensure that any LNG vapour that might otherwise have been leaked during the refuelling process, will instead be recovered, and recycled back into the storage tanks. The benefits of such a system are twofold: preventing fuel wastage and reducing unintended leakages.

PSA Singapore will be gradually taking delivery of more LNG PMs in the coming months, with 160 LNG PMs to be deployed in Pasir Panjang Terminal by the end of August 2021. When fully deployed, these LNG PMs are projected to reduce about 4,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions per year as compared to using diesel PMs.
