Mersin International Port Launches Gate Project

Mersin International Port (MIP) has launched the Gate Project together with its partners – the Mersin Governorship, the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality, Turkish State Railways, and the General Directorate of Highways – to improve traffic around the terminal. Overall, MIP will spend 500 million Turkish Lira (USD27 million) to allow trucks to enter and exit the Mersin port directly from the highway and upgrade the terminal’s gates to reduce waiting times.

Over a period of ten months, the project aims to build two direct highway connection points for vehicles carrying containers and conventional cargo so that they can enter and exit the port directly, thereby avoiding the city’s busy streets.

In the next stage, MIP will upgrade its gate complex and install automated entry and exit gates at its terminal. This will significantly reduce waiting times and lines for trucks that come to the terminal to load and unload their cargo by eliminating time needed for manual operation. This upgrade is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2024.

MIP General Manager Johan Van Daele said, “With the Gate Project, we will not only be improving current traffic conditions, we will also be preparing the region to accommodate the future growth of our port, which in turn will bring more prosperity to the region.”
