PSA Singapore Sets New Productivity Records

On 3 May 2021, PSA Singapore achieved a new productivity high on the container ship MANILA MAERSK. New records were set for the largest number of moves made and the highest volume (in TEUs) handled in a single call at PSA Singapore. A whopping 13,227 containers – or 22,761 TEUs – were moved on the vessel in a single call, overtaking the previous highs of 12,481 containers (21,455 TEUs) achieved on the METTE MAERSK just over a year ago.

Stretching nearly 400 metres long and 58 metres wide, MANILA MAERSK is designed to carry over 20,000 TEUs. Due to supply chain disruptions caused by the Suez Canal blockage, the mega vessel increased its transhipment volume and designated PSA Singapore a port of call as part of a contingency plan to reconnect transhipment containers. MANILA MAERSK also loaded numerous empty containers from PSA Singapore to meet the surge in demand in Thailand, which played a major part in creating the high volume in this single vessel call.

Despite a port stay of over 58 hours, the team at Pasir Panjang Terminal 3 were well-prepared, demonstrating the stamina and tenacity needed to run this marathon as one. The team’s immaculate planning and hard work allowed MANILA MAERSK to leave on time, catching the required daylight window for the journey to its next port of call at Laem Chabang.

PSA Regional CEO Southeast Asia Ong Kim Pong sang praises of the team, “At the most challenging moments, the team achieved a very purposeful feat. I am very proud of all of you and PSA Singapore for this amazing accomplishment. Bravo!”
