Reducing Emissions Across PSA India – Inauguration of Solar Farm at PSA Mumbai and New Hybrid RTGs at PSA Chennai

PSA India continues to make strides towards sustainability and increasing its use of renewable energy sources, with the inauguration of a 1-megawatt (MW) Solar Farm at PSA Mumbai on 18 February 2022! The solar farm features rooftop solar panels and is a 1.3-hectare facility. It is projected to generate 13% of PSA Mumbai’s annual power requirements and reduce CO2 emissions by over 1,200 tonnes per year.

In line with the PSA Group’s climate targets, PSA Mumbai is targeting a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 (against a 2019 baseline year). Among other major initiatives in progress, the terminal will deploy a fleet of all-electric Rubber-tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGs) and other e-vehicle options for its Phase 2 development.

These initiatives by PSA Mumbai and its stakeholders support the JNPT target of achieving 60% renewable power usage, articulated under the Maritime India Vision 2030.

In addition, 2 hybrid RTGs also arrived at PSA Chennai in February 2022, with each RTG reducing carbon emissions by 47% or 162 tonnes per year compared to diesel RTGs. PSA Chennai had also recently celebrated a milestone of handling 9 million TEUs since the start of the terminal’s operations.

Managing Director of PSA India Mike Formoso said, “These efforts underscore our drive to reduce emissions whilst growing PSA India’s volumes and footprint across India. Across our terminal and Container Freight Station entities, many more sustainability initiatives are well underway, ranging from biofuels to energy-efficient smart LED lighting as we work to halve our emissions by 2030.”
