SPIA Continues A Stellar Performance!

Since its inception in November 2016, Sociedad Puerto Industrial Aguadulce (SPIA) in Colombia has matured and grown. In 2019, records for vessel productivity, using just four quay cranes, consistently reached new heights. The terminal broke its earlier record of 153 box movements per hour to hit a new high of 216 movements this recent July.

This sterling performance is testament to the commitment and dedication shown by SPIA employees, many of whom hail from neighbouring communities, and having had no port or formal job experience prior to joining the company. By proper training and positive motivation, while fostering a sense of belonging and responsibility, coupled with good operational and safety practices, everyone at the terminal contributed to improving productivity year on year.

Further recognition for SPIA came in the form of two important awards received earlier this year. The first award – “Labour Inclusion: Equality is for Everyone” – was jointly awarded in May by two government agencies, the Department for Social Prosperity and Comfenalco Valle. It recognised SPIA’s involvement in a project to connect labour supply and demand, as well as mitigate the barriers to entry for people securing jobs. As a result of this initiative, the terminal was able to employ 96 employees and provide training for them.

More recently in July, the Secretariat of the Inter-American Committee on Ports of the Organisation of American States presented the terminal with the “Maritime Award of the Americas for Social Responsibility”. The award highlights the leadership, dedication and commitment of SPIA towards the sustainable development of the Puerto Aguadulce Compass Social Welfare Foundation. The “Maritime Awards of the Americas” recognises practices in the maritime port sector which demonstrate excellence, leadership, innovation and successful application potential.

Kudos to SPIA and keep up the good work!
