Three PSA Winners at the Singapore May Day Awards 2018

The prestigious May Day Awards are bestowed on people and companies who have made significant contributions to the labour movement in Singapore. Organised by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), this year’s ceremony was held on 5 May 2018 at Mediacorp’s MES Theatre in Singapore. A total of 141 awards were presented to individual leaders and organisations for their outstanding contributions to workers in Singapore, including three key members of the PSA family.
Group CEO Tan Chong Meng received the Medal of Commendation. Forging strong partnerships with both unions and staff, he consistently involved them in preparing the organisation for the future by pre-empting industry trends and looking at ways to co-create the future together. He typically involves the unions in the organisation’s initiatives from an early stage. From the onset, union leaders are kept apprised of the rationale behind certain decisions being made and are kept involved in focus groups. For his stalwart commitment to partnership with the unions and unwavering support of the labour movement and staff, Chong Meng is a role model for leadership leveraging tripartism for the good of the organisation.
Kenny Ng won the ‘Comrade of Labour Award’. He serves as the First Deputy General Secretary for the Singapore Port Workers Union (SPWU), as well as Chairman of the Care & Share Committee and a Member of the Care & Share Committee at NTUC level. Kenny has constantly engaged all officials on how to implement initiatives to benefit members, especially those who are less well-off. In the field of industrial relations, Kenny serves as the Co-Chairman of Brani Terminal Divisional Committee, spending much of his time on the ground garnering feedback and discussing with management partners on how to improve not just the working conditions of his members but also their physical wellbeing and overall health.
Chia Ding Shan also received the ‘Comrade of Labour Award”. He was elected into the Executive Committee of Port Officers’ Union (POU) as a Member, and oversees the Care & Share Committee and IT-related matters. At PSA Singapore, Ding Shan contributed significantly to improving and maintaining the harmonious industrial relations climate. He was the Chairperson of the ICT Sub-Committee which was set up to resolve issues unique to the ICT professionals. At the national level, Ding Shan represented POU in the NTUC Care and Share Committee as its main Member since 2010 and was also the Alternate Member in the Young NTUC Committee in 2012.
Congratulations to Chong Meng, Kenny and Ding Shan, our three PSA winners at the May Day Awards 2018. These prestigious accolades are testament to the care PSA has for its people, as well as a celebration of PSA’s close collaboration with its union partners.
